Breastfeeding May Help Protect You From Breast Cancer

Previous reseach has shown that women who have fewer than 4 children or delay childbirth until after age 25, have increased risks of breast cancer. This research also showed that having more children or having children at an early age only helped protect from the hormone fueled cancers and not the harder to treat forms.

A recent study of 2493 women (both black and white) over the age of 55 has shown that breastfeeding provided additional protection against both types of tumors regardless of when the woman gave birth or number of children.

With the occurance of breast cancer seeming to grow each year, this is much awaited positive news for many new and expectant moms.

Wupzey Highchair Food Catcher

When letting my children learn to feed themselves in their highchair, more food usually ended up on floor than actually made it to their mouth! Seems like I'm not the only one to experience this...

After months of cleaning the floor whenever her daughter ate in the high chair, California Mom Johanna Romaniuk had an idea to change the mealtime experience for moms & babies worldwide.

At 5 months, Johanna's daughter preferred to eat by herself, leaving a mess on the floor after each meal. Looking for solutions, Johanna tried the large, bulky floor mats that still needed sweeping. Fold, clean, unfold - the mat turned out to be more work than just letting the food fall directly onto the floor!

Out of necessity, Johanna created the Highchair Food Catcher
which is lightweight, compact and durable. Out of necessity, Johanna created the high chair food catcher which is lightweight, compact and durable. She made it easy to attach, detach, clean and able store on the highchair. She also made it to be strong enough to catch "sippy cups," toys and utensils. And, of course, it is completely machine washable.

We recently tried the Wupzey Highchair Food Catcher and were thrilled when the disgarded bread crust did not end up on the kitchen floor!

Check out this great food catcher and other great baby items at Wupzey

Another reason to breastfeed!

Swedish scientists have announced that breastfeeding for 13 months or more could cut moms risk for developing rheumatoid arthritis in half! Breastfeeding for 1 - 12 months reduces moms risk by 25%.

Breastfeeding increases oxytocin levels and this hormone is responsible for reducing stress and blood pressure.

Mother's Day Gift For Moms In Need

At this time of year I always feel so fortunate for having so much! I feel lucky to have 2 wonderful children, a wonderful husband and an incredible family ( although I wish my family was not so far away). I also feel fortunate to able to work from home which allows me the flexibility I need to be there when my children need me.

I'm also aware that not all moms are as fortunate as I am. I've seen young mothers in Downtown Los Angeles living on the street with their children. I've watched them line up outside the shelter, waiting for their turn to take a shower and be fed. I've seen the families living under a tree by the beach in Santa Monica. I've heard about children who only go to school one day a week - when it's their turn to wear the "family outfit". Last week I witnessed an 8 year old boy with holes in his dirty pants, ask for a book at the school book fair - because his family was homeless and not able to give him a few dollars to buy one. I felt the shame in his eyes and heard the other boys tease him.

Living in Los Angeles I'm aware of the huge income gap between the rich and the poor. I've heard the children in my sons class tell him about the $100 bill the tooth fairy left them. I've seen the mansions some families live in and heard my son ask why our house is not as big. My son sits on the rug in class with a child wearing $300 designer jeans on one side and a child with a hole in her shirt on the other side. I've heard the parents wonder who in this neighborhood would need the food baskets given out at the holidays but have seen those in need hide their poverty in shame.

I know that many moms in Los Angeles have to decide each day whether to buy food or diapers as they are unable to afford both. Many families have to reuse disposable diapers. I also believe that clean diapers are a necessity that every child deserves and not a luxury. Luckily the Los Angeles Diaper Drive is an amazing organization which provides diapers to families in need. Please help us to support those families not as fortunate as you this Mother's Day. By rounding up and donating your "spare change" at check out, you'll be able to provide diapers to moms who really need them. We'll also reward you for your generosity during May. Just enter Diaper Drive Promo in the comments at check-out (after rounding up your change) and we'll issue a refund for 5% off your order. Thank you so much for helping us with our mission to make sure that no mother has to choose between buying food or diapers.

I hope you and your family have a wonderful Mother's Day.

Treat Yourself with Mambino Organics

Gotta tell you about Mambino Organics! I found these great products during a recent "product searching" visit to the California Mart in Los Angeles. I love looking at the great baby and maternity lines that are represented at these markets however as I already carry Earth Mama Angel Baby - I am not usually looking for personal care products. That was until I was introduced to Mambino Organics!

Why are Mambino Organics so special? Well, lets start with the fact that their whole line is crafted using pure, luxurious and highly effective 100% natural ingredients, synergistically blended without the use of chemicals or additives....ever. This is a huge plus for me as being a vegan I'm kinda picky about what's in my products! Then I must mention their smell. This whole line smells so good and almost makes you want to taste it!

The mambino organics® skin care line was created to support and encourage your skin's ability to care for itself, using the purest and highest grade natural and organic ingredients. Processed at very low temperatures, in small batches, they keep their ingredients active and effective. The process is expensive and time consuming, which is why most skin care companies refuse to do it. The result is synergistic blend of ingredients that deliver powerful and positive results.

Of course a great company like this supports fair-trade and is ecologically responsible from thier ingedients to the packaging and printing.

I'm already a Mambino addict! Take a look and see why!

More than 3 out of 4 Moms are Breastfeeding

The CDC announced last week that more that 3 out of 4 new moms are choosing to breastfeed, making this the highest amount of breastfeeding moms in the US for at least 20 years. This number is up more than 60% from 1993 said the CDC and is at an all time high.

Experts believe that this increase is due to better educational campaigns which emphasize that if possible - breast milk is the better choice, along with a changing culture that accommodates nursing mothers.

As an experienced breastfeeding mom, I'm not sure though that our culture is as accommodating as it could be to us nursing mommies! The Family Room at the local mall with cubicles for breastfeedomg is a start but there's a lot more that could be done. I'd love to know your thoughts so feel free to comment and tell us if you think enough is being done.

Look What I'm Getting For Mother's Day

I've heard so much about this Flip Video Camcorder recently I just had to check it out for myself. I first saw it recently at a friends daughters birthday party and was really impressed by it's size and how easy it looked to use. Then it seemed like everywhere I looked people were either using the Flip or purchasing one! I became obsessed and desperate to have one!

With my summer vacation to Europe getting closer by the minute I needed to either purchase a new video camera or persuade my husband to let me take one of his (he's a videograper so does not part with his equipment easily!). We're leaving in July for 7 weeks (husband staying at home as summer is his busy season) so need someway to document our trip and post video's online so that husband can see what the children are up to. The Fip is the perfect solution as it connects directly to your USB port and allows you to easily and quickly post your video to You Tube.

Next step was to sell hubby on the idea. How convenient that Mother's Day and my birthday are next week! I emailed him the Amazon link for the Flip and found him checking them out last night. I chose the Flip Video Ultra Series Camcorder in pink. It is shipping free and due to arrive on Wednesday. As hubby is a professional videographer I'm sure he'll test it out and I'll post his opinion later next week.

Can't wait to receive my Mother's Day gift this year!
